Digital Graphics-Theory

What is a 3d model?
A 3d model is a model in computer graphics made up of triangle and quad polygon shapes to form and make an object that can be used in computer games and used on programs like 3ds max

What is the difference between sculpting and modeling? And what are the benefits of both?
Modeling is when you create a three dimensional object using other shapes and objects using polygons and you try and make the model using triangle(tris) and quad. Sculpting is when you start off with something like digital clay r

How are models made? What are the rules?
Models are made using triangles (tris) and quads otherwise you model will not texture probably when you add the textures and the lighting the be off and if you use other shaped polygons like octagons your model will not work out probably because the shape you used has to many sides

What software is used for what? Who uses them?
Autodesk 3ds Max- This is used for making 3d animation models, 3d games and images. People who use this software will mostly be people who need to make games like game developers as it's used to make 3d games and you can also import objects you've made on other programs to add into your game.

Autodesk Maya- Autodesk Maya is a 3d computer graphics application. It is used to create interactive 3D applications, including video games, animated film, TV series, or visual effects.

Autodesk Mudbox- Autodesk Mudbox is a computer-based 3d sculpting and painting tool developed by Autodesk. It's used for sculpting, texture painting and map creation.

Zbrush
Zbrush is a digital sculpting tool that has both 3d and 2.5d modeling and this is the kind of software you would use to make a model to put into 3ds Max and Maya so for example you will make an object that you will include in your game and you would use Zbrush to make the model and then when its done yo import it into 3ds Max or Maya

Blender
Blender is an open-source 3d computer graphics software toolset used for creating animated films, visual effects, arts, 3d printed models, interactive 3d applications and video games

What are constrains?
Constrains are the Poly Count, Texture resolution and Lighting budget of your object

What software is used to texture?
The most common software for texturing is Photoshop CC but at industry standard they use Algorithmic Substance Painter and Algorithmic Substance Designer

What do game engines do? Why do big developers/publishers make there own?
Game engines are programs used pacifically to make video games. Some big developers and publishers make their own because it will be a lot easier for them to make a sequel for their game because their engine will have the mechanics and will be a lot easier to understand.

Provide 5 game engine examples and their pros/cons. What studios and publishers use them?

Unity
Pros
Unity is used more by beginners and people who are just getting started to using game engines.
Cons
It's not as good for developing games

GameMaker Studio
Pros
Good for making 2d games as it's a 2d game engine
Cons
You can't make 3d games with GameMaker

Blender Game Engine
Pros
It includes support features such as Python scripting and OpenAL 3D sound it's also free
Cons
Quite hard to learn as their are so many features so it might take a bit of getting used to

Godot
Pros
You can make 2d and 3d games on this engine and it's also cross-platform so there's a lot of choice on what you can make
Cons
The cons for Godot is it doesn't have as many features as other game engines

Source
Pros
It makes 3d games which is good as most games are now 3d so you can make a lot of games on it.
Cons
You can't make 2d games on source as it's only for making 3d games so if you want to make a 2d game you can't use this engine

How old are they? Can they utilize VR/AR?
Unity was released on June 8, 2005. 14 years ago. You can run Oculus in unity put you need the Oculus Runtime installed on your PC.

GameMaker was released on November 15 1999. 19 years ago. GameMaker can't utilize VR or AR as it's only a 2D game engine

Blender was released on January 1 1998. 21 years ago. Blender can utilize VR

Source was released in June 2004. 15 years ago

Godot was released in February 2014. 5 years ago

Vertices
Vertices are points in space. They define the structure of other sub-objects that make up the poly object. When you move or edit vertices, the connected geometry is affected as well.

Edges
Edges are how many edges are on you model.

Faces
Faces are how many flat surfaces there are on your model so if it's a cube it will have six faces.

Polygons
Polygons are what makes up your model and the shape of it they'll also be in the shape of quads and triangles

Primatives
Geometric primitives are familiar as objects in the real world such as beach balls, pipes, boxes, doughnuts, and ice cream cones. In 3ds Max you can model many such objects using a single primitive. You can also combine primitives into more complex objects and further refine them with modifiers.

Wireframe

A wireframe is a frame made of loads of lines around a model so it has a wireframe look

UV Unwrapping
UV Unwrapping is when the skin of your model is unwrapped from your model and you can apply textures or designs to it so the outer design of yoImage result for uv unwrapping 3ds maxur model looks different

Mesh
A mesh is when the net for your object is shown and you can then make adjustments to it to change the shape

Bevel
The bevel modifier extrudes shapes into 3D objects and applies a flat or round bevel to the edges. Bevel lets you extrude a shape up to four levels and specify a different outline amount for each level.

Extrude
The extrude tool is used to edit a poly on the model and you can lift it out of the other polys so it looks longer than the other polys and it gives your model more of a shape

Inset
Inset is when you make the poly smaller so you can extrude and bevel it at that point and not extruding the whole poly
